Betelgeuse is a red supergiant that shines in one of the “shoulders” of the constellation Orion. It is one of the brightest stars in the night sky, located about 640 light-years from us. As shown in this artist’s impression, the ambient environment around Betelgeuse is highly inhomogeneous due material irregularly blown away by the star. In fact, Betelgeuse is in a phase characterized by continuous expansion, and chaotic mass loss from outer layers of its atmosphere.
