I really wanted to practice handpainting a lot more than usual, and see what sort of effect I could achieve if I took the time to make some stylized textures just by hand! Also, this project was initially meant to be just a collection of vegetables, however I thought they would look very lonely simply floating around, so I developed the original idea by making a little scenery for them as well. Visual Storytelling Class Examples Using Marcos Alvarez’ Chairs concept art as initial source. Using background narrative to drive visual design in games to deliver imagined authenticity. Example Three Background Intact metail chair frames donated to the Oak Ridge Arts Center in 2005 for their stage production of DW Gregory’s ‘Radium Girls’. Distressed wood was bolted to the chair frames to match the play’s visual design of a world in decay. Side note: the ‘Sloth Panda’ sticker was applied to one of the chairs after the production had closed in 2007 by a volunteer stagehand who complained that the chair gave them headaches. In 2011 one of the ‘Radium Girls’ chairs was repurposed by the Oak Ridge Arts Committee for use as a dungeon torture chair stage prop in Qui Nguyen’s ‘She Kills Monsters’ drama-comedy production. This is the 3rd version of the Saitama 3D character models that I have been working on over the past few weeks. I have learned a lot from creating this character, and am quite OK with the result. More 3D character designs will follow. :) The initial high-resolution mesh was first sculpted using ZBrush, then ZRemeshed to create the 1st pass of retopology, which was then simplified and adjusted in Maya to make it cleaner and more game-ready. After the model was constructed in the “A-pose”, I used Maya’s built-in Human IK feature to set up the joints, skin the model, apply the rig, and pose the character. Anse de Laurons 2 is the wreck of a small Roman period sailing vessel dating to the end of the 3rd century CE, which probably sank during a storm while sheltering in the shallow harbor at Laurons, just west of Marseille in modern France. At only about 15m in length and with an estimated displacement of around 30 tons, it probably only traded between small harbors along the local coastline. When it sank, the port-side was quickly covered in sediment ensuring excellent preservation up to the deck and even the railing. Rigging elements, a spare rudder, and possible fragments from wooden panels that may have covered the hold, along with rarely-preserved structures for supporting the side rudders (the side “wings” you see in a lot of Roman period art). This reconstruction is based on plans by R. Bockius. The decorative elements are hypothetical, based on contemporary paintings and mosaics. Originally a much simpler asset, I began creating this model in Blender as a simple exercise before deciding to take the project further by improving the geometry, texturing and overall design of the asset. This included adding barbwire which initially was easy to make, but became extremely tedious when implementing changes and so I created a custom generator tool to improve iteration time and with considerably more accuracy. This was then baked in Marmoset and later textured in Substance Painter, using two materials with 4K texture sheet (using overlapping UVs to maximise quality) and a non-destructive workflow for fast iteration, then finally rendered in Marmoset Toolbag 3. My initial idea was to create a creature that would be special looking, graceful, female, filled with colors and different shapes that can be seen in nature while respecting the anatomy of a woman. Kira comes from a distant planet, and her home planet has a weaker gravity, so her body is slender and graceful. The galactic pathways are known as the best knife throws. Knives are part of her hunting nature on her planet. She is also widely known for her speed and athletics as well as her flying skills. In 1886 the engineer Carl Benz (1844–1929) of Mannheim filed a patent application for a “vehicle operated by a gas engine”. It was the first car with a gasoline engine. From today’s standpoint Benz’s Patentwagen represents the basic innovation behind an entire transport system. However, it met with very little public interest in 1886. To change that situation a market for cars first had to be established. Initially it was motor sport enthusiasts who discovered the “self-propelled” vehicles. The Benz Motorwagen initially enjoyed its greatest success in France, which became the trendsetter for Europe’s motoring community in the 1890s through marketing and sport. However, there was at least one local publicity tour, when Berta Benz headed off on the first “overland journey” by car in 1888, driving her two sons from Mannheim to Pforzheim. In the end I was inspired by the acts of kindness that have been occuring all over the world recently and the birds nesting in our garden. This lead to showing the gentle side of his character rescueing a chick and trying to return it to the nest.
