The Boeing VC-25 is a military version of the Boeing 747 airliner, modified for presidential transport and commonly operated by the United States Air Force (USAF) as Air Force One, the call sign of any U.S. Air Force aircraft carrying the president of the United States.
Only two examples of this aircraft type are in service; they are highly modified Boeing 747-200Bs, designated VC-25A and having tail numbers 28000 and 29000. Although technically the Air Force One designation applies to the aircraft only while the president is on board, the term is commonly used to refer to the VC-25 in general. The two aircraft often operate in conjunction with Marine One helicopters, which ferry the president to airports whenever a vehicle motorcade would be inappropriate. At low speeds and hover, it would operate as a helicopter; at higher speeds, aircraft-style propulsion systems would power it forward; and at much higher speeds than helicopters normally attain, the rotors would stop rotating and would fold back and be stowed for minimum drag. The Light Amphibious Assault Warship (LAAWS), also known as the Guadalcanal Class, is the primary ship-to-shore connector for the US Navy. Its purpose is to transport US Marines and their equipment to islands alongside larger helicopter assault ships and landing docks.
There are two variants of the LAAWS: Block I and Block II, measuring 160m and 190m in length, respectively. Block I can accommodate 100 Marines and their equipment for up to 6 weeks at sea. Block II features a hangar for launching and recovering helicopters, UAVs, and USVs. It is also equipped with double the number of Vertical Launch System (VLS) cells.
