A mitre is a bishop or abbot’s distinctive ceremonial head-dress. This mitre is hand embroidered and is set with semi-precious and non-precious stones. This mitre came from St James Abbey, Ratisbon (now Regensburg), Germany. After the abbey closed, the mitre went with the last of the Scottish monks to the new abbey they founded at Fort Augustus in 1862. Exploring Castle Hill is part of a Cultural Heritage and Archaeology Project being led by Northlight Heritage for Garnock Connections. The Project is funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund and Historic Environment Scotland. Mask from a complete cartonnage consisting of mask and three breast pieces. Excavated by the Egypt Exploration Society at Abydos. Ancient Egyptian, dating to the Ptolemaic period, 323-30 BC. The gold colouring reflects the ancient Egyptian belief that that god’s skin was made from that material. Other symbols of rebirth after death include the winged scarab beetle, show on the top of the head.

This is a wooden wheel found at Bar Hill fort along the Antonine Wall. It has eleven spokes, a nave of elm and hubs that are lined with iron.
The Antonine Wall stretched right across Scotland, from the Clyde to the Forth. Constructed around 142 AD, and occupied for only 20 years, the remains of its ramparts, steep ditches, forts and bathhouses are still visible today.

A Samian ware platter from Falkirk, possibly associated with Camelon fort. It is 5cm high and 18cm in diameter. It was made near Lezoux in France and the maker’s mark ’ RIIOGENIM ‘, which translates as ‘Ritogenus’, is stamped on the inside of the base.
Fine dishes such as these would have been used by the Roman officers and their families stationed in the forts along the Antonine Wall.
The Antonine Wall stretched right across Scotland, from the Clyde to the Forth. Since 2008, it has been part of the Frontiers of the Roman Empire World Heritage Site.

This cope and hood dates from around 1860 and features the four Evangelists’ emblems and their names in Latin: St Matthew (the Winged Man), St. Mark (the Winged Lion); the Luke (the Winged Ox); St John (the Eagle). The sacred monogram of Jesus ‘I.H.S.’ is in the centre of a cross, with stylised flowers and pomegranites.
The hood features Christ and St. John the Beloved, surmounted by the Sacred Heart with Flames, Crown of Thorns, Anchor and Cross. The techniques used are needle painting in coloured silks and gold crouching, trimmed with a heavy gold bullion fringe.
