A finely decorated silver-gilt casket, made in Paris around 1490-1510, and believed to have been owned by Mary, Queen of Scots. It is an extremely rare example of French silver from the Renaissance era because much was melted down for their precious metals. Its survival attests to its association with Mary, and it has been treasured as a relic of this unfortunate queen by the Dukes of Hamilton for over 340 years. Its particular renown derives from the belief that it is the casket that was dramatically produced at a hearing against Mary at Westminster in 1568, containing the notorious ‘Casket Letters’, used as evidence of the queen's complicity in the murder of her husband Henry, Lord Darnley. Hidden in a wooded estate, well outside Glasgow’s city boundary, Lennox Castle hospital - built for (pounds) 1m - was chosen for its rural, peaceful and safe location.
Apart from a few who had jobs on neighbouring farms, the 1500 patients catered for at its peak, aged from 10 to 80, lived mainly in their own community, separate from their neighbours in Lennoxtown, with their own workshops, school and recreational facilities.

A WWII radar station on Ward Hill, Fair Isle, it was a Coast Defence U-boat (C.D.U.) station which was the naval version of the R.A.F.’s Chain Home Low (C.H.L.) radar. Radar was used here to track shipping and surfaced submarines and at longer distances aircraft. Something that makes this site unusual is that parts of the antennas and their turntables still survive here. After the war the site was partially dismantled then some buildings/structures blown up with explosives. Damage to the floors indicate where some of the charges were set.
Fair Isle is situated about half way between the Orkney Isles and the Shetland Isles off the north coast of Scotland.
