This object forms part of the Galloway Hoard, the richest collection of rare and unique Viking-age objects ever found in Britain or Ireland. Buried around AD 900, the Galloway Hoard contains over 100 diverse objects, from silver, gold and jewelled treasures to rarely surviving textiles, including wool, linen and Scotland’s earliest examples of silk. The Skuldelev ships are a group of five well preserved 11th century ships from the Viking period, found in the Roskilde Fjord in Denmark near the town of Skuldelev. Skuldelev 2 was a large ocean going longship, a war vessel probably known as a Skeid - the type of vessel also known in the sagas as “dragon ships”. From analyzing the wood of the ship archaeologists were able to determine the ship had been built in Ireland around the 1040’s CE, the furthest away of all the Skuldelev ships. This digital recreation is based on the ‘The Sea Stallion from Glendalough’, a full scale reconstruction made by the Roskilde Viking Ship Museum.

A Samian ware platter from Falkirk, possibly associated with Camelon fort. It is 5cm high and 18cm in diameter. It was made near Lezoux in France and the maker’s mark ’ RIIOGENIM ‘, which translates as ‘Ritogenus’, is stamped on the inside of the base.
Fine dishes such as these would have been used by the Roman officers and their families stationed in the forts along the Antonine Wall.
The Antonine Wall stretched right across Scotland, from the Clyde to the Forth. Constructed around 142 AD, and occupied for only 20 years, the remains of its ramparts, steep ditches, forts and bathhouses are still visible today. Since 2008, it has been part of the Frontiers of the Roman Empire World Heritage Site.
