Such an important sculpture could not escape the notice of Pope Julius II (1503-1513) who bought it immediately and had it displayed in the Statues Courtyard (Cortile delle Statue), making it the centrepiece of the collection. I wanted to make a new hellenic thing, but then realised that this may be original Roman design - at least I found no evidence of greek origins of the design. It’s still doric though!
This model is based on the sarcophagus of Lucius Cornelius Scipio Barbatus (clearly a roman guy), and here is the fun fact - the inscription on the tablet was once redone, most likely by one of the relatives of Scipio.

The medieval chess pieces from the Scottish island of Lewis are among our most popular collections. They give us fascinating insights into the international connections of western Scotland and the growing popularity of chess in medieval Europe.
The eleven chess pieces on display in the Museum of Scotland were part of a large hoard buried on Lewis. The hoard contained 93 gaming pieces in total, including at least four chess sets as well as pieces from other games. The chess pieces were probably made in the late 12th or early 13th century in Norway.
