  Cairn Liath Broch, nr Golspie, Sutherland 3D Model 2023-11-04
Cairn Liath is an Iron Age broch that sits proudly on a rocky knoll and commands views over a long stretch of coastline. Broch’s are substantial stone towers or roundhouses only found in the far north of Scotland. They were constructed and used between 600 BC and 100 AD. This broch has a circular interior 10.2m in diameter and substantial walls over 5m thick; there was one entrance passage to the building. The walls survive to 3.66m high, but originally the building would have stood to a considerably height and had higher floors. A staircase to higher levels was built into the wall. The third Duke of Sutherland ‘cleared’ this broch in 1868 and some of his finds from his antiquarian excavations are preserved in the National Museum of Scotland. A WWII radar station on Ward Hill, Fair Isle, it was a Coast Defence U-boat (C.D.U.) station which was the naval version of the R.A.F.’s Chain Home Low (C.H.L.) radar. Radar was used here to track shipping and surfaced submarines and at longer distances aircraft. Something that makes this site unusual is that parts of the antennas and their turntables still survive here. After the war the site was partially dismantled then some buildings/structures blown up with explosives. Damage to the floors indicate where some of the charges were set. Fair Isle is situated about half way between the Orkney Isles and the Shetland Isles off the north coast of Scotland. This timber carving of the archangel St Michael stands at 3.3 metres tall, with its large medallion engraved with a cross coming in at 5.4 meters and is suspended from the vaulted ceiling on the Scottish National War Memorial 9.3 metres above the casket that holds the Roll of Honour of the Scottish War Dead. The carving is made of Scottish Oak and was made by the Clow brothers from a design by Alice Meredith-Williams. The Scottish War Memorial opened in 1927 after the former North Barracks were altered. It is located at the North side of Crown Square, at the site of the church of St Mary, previously used as munitions store in the 1530s. It is cared for on behalf of the nation by a charity that is administered by a board of trustees.
