A finely decorated silver-gilt casket, made in Paris around 1490-1510, and believed to have been owned by Mary, Queen of Scots. It is an extremely rare example of French silver from the Renaissance era because much was melted down for their precious metals. Its survival attests to its association with Mary, and it has been treasured as a relic of this unfortunate queen by the Dukes of Hamilton for over 340 years. Its particular renown derives from the belief that it is the casket that was dramatically produced at a hearing against Mary at Westminster in 1568, containing the notorious ‘Casket Letters’, used as evidence of the queen's complicity in the murder of her husband Henry, Lord Darnley. A Samian ware platter from Falkirk, possibly associated with Camelon fort. It is 5cm high and 18cm in diameter. It was made near Lezoux in France and the maker’s mark ’ RIIOGENIM ‘, which translates as ‘Ritogenus’, is stamped on the inside of the base.
Fine dishes such as these would have been used by the Roman officers and their families stationed in the forts along the Antonine Wall.
The Antonine Wall stretched right across Scotland, from the Clyde to the Forth. Constructed around 142 AD, and occupied for only 20 years, the remains of its ramparts, steep ditches, forts and bathhouses are still visible today. Since 2008, it has been part of the Frontiers of the Roman Empire World Heritage Site.

This is a turned wassail bowl with decorations from Duff House.
The ancient New Year practice of ‘wassailing’ was practiced in England, Scotland and Wales. Parties progressed from house to house with greetings for the health and prosperity of the inhabitants, which were acknowledged by communal drinking out of a Wassail bowl.
Although the drink differed from region to region, it usually contained a mixture of spiced ale, wine or cider. The term ‘wassail’ comes from the Anglo-Saxon ‘waes-hael’, which was the equivalent of the drinking toast ‘good health’ today.
Wassail bowls can be ceramic or wood. Some are very elaborate, like this example in the Dunimarle Collection. The weight of this bowl and decorations on the rim may indicate that it had more of a decorative function.

Cairn Liath is an Iron Age broch that sits proudly on a rocky knoll and commands views over a long stretch of coastline. Broch’s are substantial stone towers or roundhouses only found in the far north of Scotland. They were constructed and used between 600 BC and 100 AD.
This broch has a circular interior 10.2m in diameter and substantial walls over 5m thick; there was one entrance passage to the building. The walls survive to 3.66m high, but originally the building would have stood to a considerably height and had higher floors. A staircase to higher levels was built into the wall.
The third Duke of Sutherland ‘cleared’ this broch in 1868 and some of his finds from his antiquarian excavations are preserved in the National Museum of Scotland.
