The M1A4E3 Abrams began its life in 2020 as the M1AWSTB (Advanced Weapons Systems Test Bed) when the U.S. Army put out a request for a more powerful armament for its M1A3 tanks. 4 years and 3 developmental prototypes later and the A4E3 was finally entered into service. The entire program cost over $16 billion dollars from concept to production and each tank cost $32 million to produce, limiting the production to only 196 examples. The new tank boasted a number of new features and advantages over previous Abrams models and was a cut above any other current generation tank. The XMX-100 Bi-lateral Railgun was the first magnetic projection weapon ever to enter operational service. It was capable of firing a 48lb projectile at a muzzle velocity of over 8,100 feet per second, or just over Mach 7. The resulting impact has over 107,000 newtons of force. Got together with a bunch of my buddies one morning and we all took tons of photos (1780) while another friend flew a drone over and around the arch to get the above photos (another 1739).
Here’s a screengrab that shows all the camera angles we captured, including the drone shots:
The arch is over 24 meters (80 feet) tall and it’s right in the middle of a high traffic intersection, so it presents many challenges, and I’m not even talking about all the trees around it.
It’s my first large-scale scan and I hit so many walls with getting it to come out well, largely because ZBrush has a 50 million polygon limit. Anyway, this is the first of many.
