The Merchants Exchange Building is an office building located at 465 California Street, San Francisco, completed in 1904. The skyscraper was designed by architects Daniel Burnham and Willis Polk in Beaux-Arts, and features a modern steel-frame skeleton and a facade of Tennessee granite and brick sheathing. It was one of the tallest buildings in the city at the time of the 1906 San Francisco earthquake. Although it was one of the few buildings to survive the quake and subsequent fires, it was heavily damaged. The City believed a quick repair would help create a sense of hope and security for many San Franciscans, and this was accomplished by Polk, with the help of nascent architect Julia Morgan. The model has been optimised as much as possible without compromising the structure and detail of the original building. I have been wanting to do this for a while because I always thought it was facinating how much this painting already looked like a lowpoly 3d scene! I’ve also always been a fan of the aesthetic of the Futurist movement. I finally sat down to do this because I realized that this would be perfect for this month’s lowpoly challenge, seeing as Futurism was an art movement that portrayed utopian visions of a high tech future. So with that in mind, this is my second entry to the UtopiaLPChallenge, this one being in the pastel color scheme rather then the neon one like my first submission. I would have used a longer chain of buildings to be more faithful to the original work, but wanted to ensure that I remained within the 2000 triangle limit (final count for scene is 1964 tris) of the challenge. The whole scene was modeled and animated in Blender and textured in Substance Painter. 9 weeks in total to get this girl working. From sculpting to rigging, animation and character controllers, this goblin has been a heck of a challenge. I’m happy to be out of the other side with a lot more useful skills under my belt. I made this character for my uni assesment after an artwork by Sam Frisk on Twitter. I followed a high to low workflow, maxed roughness PBR texture, and even made a simple custom rig.
