This is an M14 Battle rifle that has been converted to a prototype hybrid tech weapon. This was part of a series of weapons designed as part of a covert US military project that began in the mid 1960s. [REDACTED]. Project ATIW (Advanced Technologies Infantry Weapon). This particular prototype explored the idea of using chemical propellants and electromagnetism in tandem to fire the projectiles. The core of this weapon system operates mostly like a standard M14(without full automatic capability). Once the projectile is fired, a series of high powered electromagnetic coils further accelerates the projectile before it exits the barrel. The ammunition is comprised of a ferromagnetic core with a proprietary heat resistant tungsten alloy jacket that is capable of withstanding incredibly high temperatures and pressures. Got together with a bunch of my buddies one morning and we all took tons of photos (1780) while another friend flew a drone over and around the arch to get the above photos (another 1739). Here’s a screengrab that shows all the camera angles we captured, including the drone shots: The arch is over 24 meters (80 feet) tall and it’s right in the middle of a high traffic intersection, so it presents many challenges, and I’m not even talking about all the trees around it. It’s my first large-scale scan and I hit so many walls with getting it to come out well, largely because ZBrush has a 50 million polygon limit. Anyway, this is the first of many.
