This 3D model is a composite of two scans - one from an live Eastern Painted Turtle housed at the Maymont Nature Center (https://maymont.org/animals/nature-center/), and the other a preserved Eastern Painted Turtle from the Natural History Collection at the University of Massachusetts at Amherst (https://bcrc.bio.umass.edu/nhc/home). CG artists Jer Bot, Johnson Martin and Robert Gutierrez used Blender to reconstruct the full turtle from these scans, as well as animate the movements. This is a diorama inspired by one of Florian Dreyer’s concepts I found on Artstation called ‘Candy Farm Building’. I loved the colours and textures from the concept and really enjoyed creating it in 3D. I’m really enjoying creating these small diorama’s with handpainted textures so I’m sure there will be more coming soon. I used Maya for the modelling and Substance and Photoshop for texturing. Miao Dao are rather late comers to the family of Chinese swords. They didn’t appear until the fall of Qing dynasty (1911). Due to their massive sizes, they often get compared to western two handed swords and Japanese Ōdachi. Many of them feature pipe-back design （丁背） with very thick spines and relatively thin blades to significantly reduce weight. Such design is very close to the British 1821 cavalry/infantry sabre which managed to significantly lengthened the blade under the same benefit of weight reduction. This particular model is over 150cm long and weighs only about 1300g witha POB of 11cm! Two handed swords came and gone in Chinese history. Another period where they got significant uses was the Ming dynasty, famously used in the army of General Qi, Jiguang, who wrote treatises and admit being inspired by Japanese Shinkage-ryū. VRCPrefabs is a VRChat development community focused mainly on creating + helping others create interactive experiences within social VR. The original Prefabs logo itself was designed by BlueASIS, Tero and CyanLaser. For this project, we had a narrow turnaround of 12 days to go from concept to final. VRChat needed to support first-generation Oculus Quest hardware (mobile hardware) in their New Years environment so we were given a very tight perf budget of 2,500 polys, a single material, and a 1024x1024 max res limit for any textures.
