Large pendant containing a carefully shaped metamorphic stone in a gold case decorated with filigree and granulation. This object forms part of the Galloway Hoard, the richest collection of rare and unique Viking-age objects ever found in Britain or Ireland. Buried around AD 900, the Galloway Hoard contains over 100 diverse objects, from silver, gold and jewelled treasures to rarely surviving textiles, including wool, linen and Scotland’s earliest examples of silk. The Skuldelev ships are a group of five well preserved 11th century ships from the Viking period, found in the Roskilde Fjord in Denmark near the town of Skuldelev. Skuldelev 1 was a large ocean going ship, a trading vessel probably known as a Knarr. From analyzing the wood of the ship archaeologists were able to determine the ship had been built on the west coast of Norway around the 1030’s CE, and so ended it’s life far from where it was built. At some point in its life it had suffered massive damage which left it with a warped keel, and which necessitated significant reconstruction of the hull. This digital recreation is based on the ‘Ottar’, a full scale reconstruction made by the Roskilde Viking Ship Museum. The provision of a tent over the hold is hypothetical.
