In ancient Greek mythology Ethiopian princess Andromeda was bound to a rock amid the waves of the Red sea. Why? Her mother, Cassiopeia boasted that Andromeda is far more beautifull then all the nymphs of the sea! This angered the god Poseidon who sent a monster creature, Cetus (Ketos) to torment people of ancient Ethiopia. The beautifull princess was to be eaten by a sea moster to soothe the anger of the god! In the very last moment a hero - Perseus flew (on Hermes winged sandals) and saved the princess from the vile beast. Here is where the official myth ends and my own artistic interpretation of it begins. When researching Andromeda, I could only find white, pale damsels in distress. Angered by this I wanted to depict Andromeda as a true African princess. I disliked the concept of a helpless damsel and decided to give her some character. I also wanted to portray Ketos as a bewildered sea dragon not an angry whale. I uploaded the sword alone previously and planned to upload its sheath separately, but eventually decided put them together so it can have a complete showcase as a set. Both high res model and all the details made in Zbrush, painted the texture in substance painter. The animal on the sheath at first was just flat shapes with no details on it, and I thought I finished the model. Later on I looked at it again and again, eventually decided I should add more details and to make the animal figures more alive and to give them more characters, since this was a sword made for Paraoh’s battles, it just has to have that spirit. Painting the texture was another challenge since there are just so many details on the original antique. Made this piece with a heart of awe, and it was a great learning experience!
