Il présente la statue telle qu’elle était peu de temps après sa découverte en trois fragments en 1651 dans le théâtre antique, et avant son envoi à Paris. En effet, la Vénus d’Arles a été offerte en 1683 par les Arlésiens au roi louis XIV sur sa demande pour décorer la galerie des Glaces du château de Versailles. À l’origine, la sculpture en marbre plus grande que nature, aujourd’hui conservée au musée du Louvre, décorait sans doute une des niches du mur de scène du théâtre romain où elle accompagnait la statue colossale d’Auguste. Galleys were used in Russia from Peter the Great onwards. The heritage of all galleys, Russian and Swedish, can be found on the Mediterranean. By 1790 this ship type was becoming obsolete. While it was large, the galley had difficulty navigating the open seas and could only carry a few guns in the bow and stern. It was essentially a carry-over from an earlier era of close combat on the seas. Some 80+ of these galleys were built in the 18th century in Russia. But after this war they were increasingly supplanted by smaller gun sloops of the Swedish type.
