This model of a two-decker, 64-gun ship of the line dates from around 1700. Little is known about its earliest history. Although it has a partial interior, details such as the quarter galleries are missing and it is possible that the model was never finished. 3D model by Adam de Kaminski for SMTM, 2024. This cast of a Megalonyx claw was 3-D scanned with a Go!Scan50 scanner in December 2018 at the Academy of Natural Sciences in Philadelphia. The original giant ground sloth (Megalonyx jeffersonii) claw was sent to Thomas Jefferson in the late 1700s from a cave in what is now West Virginia.Repository specimen number ANSP 12507. It was recovered from Big Bone Lick, Kentucky by William Clark in 1807 for Thomas Jefferson. Courtesy of the Academy of Natural Sciences. A Virginia Commonwealth University Seed Grant supported the research trip that made this scanning effort possible. This giant ground sloth (Megalonyx jeffersonii) figurine was purchased by one of my students at Big Bone Lick, Kentucky, a major paleontological site with the remains not only of this species of giant ground sloth, but also mastodons, mammoths, and so many more Pleistocene fossils. Long known to American Indians, they brought this site to the attention of European explorers in the early 1700s, who soon began shipping fossils to eastern North America and then on to Europe. William Clark (of Lewis and Clark fame) collected numerous fossils on behalf of Thomas Jefferson. This figurine was 3D scanned with a NextEngine Desktop 3D scanner.
