Ornately carved sandstone stela from the Archaeological Park and Ruins of Quiriguá, an inscribed UNESCO World Heritage Site in the Department of Izabal, Guatemala. The piece was 3D laser scanned in 2019 during the extensive documentation survey at the site by our USF Libraries DHHC team. We utilized structured light scanners at various resolutions on this monument as well as imaging and longer range laser scanning to capture landscape context details. This exquisite drinking cup for atol in the collection of the Snite Museum of Art at the University of Notre Dame (cat. # 1982.053) is adorned along the rim with jaguar prints on the inside and hieroglyphs on the outside. The previously unpublished inscription is one of the finest examples of seventh-century Maya caligraphy and contains rare variants of number 9 and TZ’AK. There are no personal names or place names. The text only states that the cup belonged to “the artisan of the eternal lord”. The orthography of the inscription is rather unusual: the scribe apparently tried to arrange the text so that it would consist of 20 characters in 11 segments (blocks) with an extra visual emphasis on the word “eternal (bolon tz’akbuul)”. This carved stone monument is from the Maya site of Quirigua, Department of Izabal, Guatemala (UNESCO World Heritage site). Working in collaboration with Guatemalan archaeologists and site management, our team of heritage and 3D specialists are recording thestela and carvings as well as terrain and site landscape details. Description: Three larger fragments of the “black altar” and one smaller partial fragment area. This carved scene contains three figures and two hieroglyph block areas. The piece is on display at the Museo Nacional de Arqueología y Etnología in Guatemala City. It sits on a cement block and wood display cradle, and is in the salon including many sculptures from Kaminaljuyu. University of South Florida researchers Travis Doering and Lori Collins documented the piece using triangulation scanning, and the USF Libraries Digital Heritage and Humanities Collections model of the 3D data highlights the carved surface details with shading and rendering using ambient occlusion.

Colored-in tortoise plastron with oracular inscription
This artifact dates to the late Shang period 1; it is a divination inscription of Wu Ding. Cinnabar ink was painted upon part of the scripts. The inscribed texts record how on the day of binzi, the diviner, Wei, asked two questions in a positive-and-negative pair: “a bountiful year for me” or “a poor year for me,” to prophesize whether there would be a good harvest that year. Generally, oracular inscriptions are carved beside the divination cracks to avoid them, which is called bi zhao. Interestingly, on this artifact, there is text inscribed upon the divination cracks, which is called fan zhao.

Founded in 1350 C.E., Ayutthaya was the Siamese capital of Thailand until the 18th century. Ayutthaya developed into a booming city starting in 1378 C.E., surpassing the old capital of Sukhothai. King Ramathibodi declared Ayutthaya the new capital and it was named after a magical kingdom from the Ramakien, an epic story about Thailand. The city was attacked and burned to the ground in 1767 C.E. by the Burmese army. The only remaining buildings in Ayutthaya are of stone, as the wood structure burned to the ground in 1767 C.E. After the destruction of Ayutthaya, the capital was moved to Bangkok and there was an effort to recreate the urban template and architecture of Ayutthaya. In Thai, the official name of Bangkok retains Ayutthaya as part of the formal name.
