The bronze helmet, it appears to be the case that the ‘’Niederbieber’’ helmet was both a Roman infantry and cavalry helmet in the late 2nd and 3rd century and worn by Legionaries and Auxiliaries alike. The helmet provides quite an extensive amount of protection without hindering the eyes or ears of the legionary within. The original helmet was found on the archaeological site in Niederbieber, on the remains of a Roman Auxiliar-Fort near the Raetian Limes at the Wied, a tributary of the Rhine. This is my first big character project using Zbrush and Substance Painter. I followed some good advices from Shane Olson’s Youtube courses to achieve what I did here. During the construction of a new riverside wall in 1962 in London, the remains of an interesting ship were found. Dating evidence from the timbers and a coin found in the mast step placed the ship as likely being built, and sunk, during the Roman period, specifically in the 2nd Century CE. However, the ship was constructed in the Celtic tradition.
The reconstruction is based primarily on the excavation report by Peter Marsden published by English Heritage, “Ships of the Port of London – First to eleventh Centuries AD”. It contained detailed drawings of the remains and reconstruction drawings. Where no evidence remained, such as for the sails and the rear of the ship, Roman period iconography and other Roman period shipwrecks from northern Europe were used as inspiration.
