Le puits est enfermé dans le bastion de Saint André, couvert par une voûte pour résister à l’épreuve des boulets. Le puits est creusé dans le roc: diamètre de 5,85 m. et profondeur de 63 m. Pour accéder à l’eau un système déjà utilisé à l’époque romaine et au Moyen Age a été installé. Le même principe a été également mis en place dans tous les projets de Vauban. Le puits des forçats ou Roue d’écureuil ou cage à écureuil a été reconstitué. L’ensemble est composé d’une grande roue dans laquelle un homme en marchant à l’intérieur entraînait l’enroulement de la corde autour de l’axe permettant le relevage de deux seaux. Cette copie en plâtre est un surmoulage du XVIIIe siècle. Il a été réalisé d’après le premier moulage effectué sur l’original antique par le sculpteur Jean Péru au XVIIe siècle. Il présente la statue telle qu’elle était peu de temps après sa découverte en trois fragments en 1651 dans le théâtre antique, et avant son envoi à Paris. En effet, la Vénus d’Arles a été offerte en 1683 par les Arlésiens au roi louis XIV sur sa demande pour décorer la galerie des Glaces du château de Versailles. À l’origine, la sculpture en marbre plus grande que nature, aujourd’hui conservée au musée du Louvre, décorait sans doute une des niches du mur de scène du théâtre romain où elle accompagnait la statue colossale d’Auguste. Le pied droit en avant et le talon gauche soulevé indiquent que le personnage est représenté en mouvement. Il s’agirait d’une évocation d’un des épisodes les plus célèbres de la mythologie gréco-romaine : le quatrième des douze travaux d’Hercule. Après avoir capturé vivant le terrifiant sanglier d’Érymanthe sur l’ordre du roi Eurysthée, le demi-dieu armé de sa massue ramène à la cour l’animal sauvage vaincu comme preuve de sa victoire en portant sa lourde charge sur son dos.
