This project feels like the reimaging of two separate projects I’ve done in the past. Mountain top castle, and lighthouse island. Both projects that at the time I was pleased with, but looking back on I felt weren’t my best. I liked their premises a lot so I went ahead and merged the two together. Thus Castle Island was born! Now for this scene, I did something I don’t often do when It comes to modelling scenes. I purchased pre-existing work. I know! Crazy, but I was having a strange amount of trouble modelling grass, I couldn’t get anything that looked “grass” you know? I found an awesome little collection pack of low poly natural and organic models. Something I do tend to struggle with making so I was in awe that I found something that fit my style and could be a great leg up in terms of things I struggle with. Definitely going to see if I can leverage these assets in the future. There are many fascinating aspects to the anatomy in this specimen - features characteristic of very young juveniles, morphology unique to whales, and injuries to the skeleton in this particular individual. Frozen specimen from the Museums Victoria mammalogy collection (NMV C40064), CT scanned (Siemens Somatom go.UP medical CT) at Monash Biomedical Imaging. Skeleton segmented from CT data using Mimics Research (v. 21.0), with meshes further processed and re-articulated in Blender 2.82. Due to perimortem damage to the skeleton, some elements were digitally repaired and mirrored for this visualisation. Scanning funded by Monash University.
