A sci-fi holographic computer I made that is loosely based off the IBM 5100. Originally created for Second Life, shown here in Metalness PBR. Textured in Quixel Suite and Photoshop, modeled in Blender with the HardOps plugin. The hologram is static for now, it normally has an animation (in other engines) but I am still trying to figure out a good way to have both a smooth interpolated rotation of the rings on the bottom and a hard transition of frames on the main screen (only way I can currently think of is to use the frame-by-frame method here but that would require way too much mesh data for smooth rotation). I started making a character inspired from the logo of Chocotaco, a twitch PUBG streamer. I designed and created this loosely retro-styled, biped robot…I didn’t want it to look over-engineered, generically futuristic or self-conciously cool, but to appear tangible, grounded and believable and robustly constructed in a way that might actually function. I had old die-cast toys and mid 20th century industrial, factory machinery in mind when I put it together and was careful to consider the layering of materials and the interfacing between them. I also tried to give it personality. To offset all that ‘grounding’, I’ve posed it dynamically in a small, dramatic scene. There’s peril, there’s lava, there’s robots! What’s not to like?
