Seden Society Puppet Theater Foundation is an important NGO that conserves mass puppet bodies, accessories and script documents. However, these relics are facing serious aging effect, such as surface cracking and peeling off, and the aging issue causes open demonstration and performance are not feasible. Besides, only few specific conservators can restore the relics, and the maintenance efficiency is very limited.
Therefore, in this project, a SOP of 3D scanning for the mass puppet bodies is established to accelerate the collection of the puppet bodies’ original mesh models, and enable the modeling staff to fix mesh flaws digitally. These STL models can be preserved in the on-line database systematically, and demonstrated in a free 3D viewpoint. Furthermore, several scanned puppet prototypes are duplicated in an enlarged scale by the 3D printer for better display function in the following exhibitions.

The school objective was to create a high quality game ready model in a month (the month being shortened to around 3 weeks due to Christmas break). For the model, I chose to create a medieval knight. The Green Knight, low poly was made in Maya, and high poly was made in zBrush. High res was sculpted in 2 days and low res was finished in around 2 days. The game res model was made using the quad draw tool in Maya and UVs were also cut in the software. When creating the low res, I also split some parts off in order to allow for customization as if the model had different armor sets. The textures were made in 4 days with the help of Substance Painter. I followed UE4 PBR guidelines and did every material as a procedural. The 3D model presents a digital reconstruction of a historical crinoline - a special framework used to expand the fullness of the skirt in the mid 19th century. The crinoline is presented in a historical patent (U.S. Patent № 22875). It has 10 hoops and 11 ribbons. A new method of parameterisation was applied to reproduce the shape and construction of the hoops, ribbons and belt (for further details see https://doi.org/10.1080/00405000.2019.1621042).
