Just a little preview for what I’m working on (and nearly done with), a 3d printable Rex droid!
There are no normal maps on this, it’s all water-tight ready to print geometry. Because of the limits of Sketchfab, it’s not SUPER high poly (like tens of millions), but it should be at the top end of the limit. It should be suitable for smaller scale print jobs, like if you wanted a 12 inch Rex droid. Probably not good enough for life-size, unless you don’t mind working with body filler and lots of sanding.
edit: a keen eyed fan pointed out the hand is the incorrect hand for this particular arm of Rex, and they’re 100% correct. For some odd reason I picked the wrong hand! I’m proud to finally present a project I’ve been working on since 2015: A diorama scene depicting the Battle of Hoth from “Star Wars Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back”.
My ultimate goal was to present drama and emotion through percieved detail while limiting my polycount as much as possible; Putting weight and motion into each hand-posed character to mimic the feeling one might get looking at a table with wargaming miniatures.
The concept was partially inspired by the Halo 3 “Believe” ad series.
Workflow:
No external textures were used, only vertex color painting and some baking for PBR compatability and reduced file size.
Done 100% in Blender3D.
What I Learned in the Process:
Getting to extensively use vertex painting was one of the most fun aspects of this project. I also gained a lot of experience in basic character modelling, and until now, I had never used Blender’s rigging system.
I gained so much more confidence in Cycles materials, and particle effects as well.
