Découverte de manière fortuite, cette statuette d’Hercule (Héraclès pour les Grecs) n’a malheureusement pas de provenance connue. Le pied droit en avant et le talon gauche soulevé indiquent que le personnage est représenté en mouvement. Il s’agirait d’une évocation d’un des épisodes les plus célèbres de la mythologie gréco-romaine : le quatrième des douze travaux d’Hercule. Après avoir capturé vivant le terrifiant sanglier d’Érymanthe sur l’ordre du roi Eurysthée, le demi-dieu armé de sa massue ramène à la cour l’animal sauvage vaincu comme preuve de sa victoire en portant sa lourde charge sur son dos.

This figurative, whole-body sculpture depicts a Roman gladiator with an upraised arm. The pedestal bears the following inscription: Ave Caesar! Morituri, salutant [Long live Caesar! Those who are going to die greet you]. The gladiator is – judging by his props – most likely a retiarius [net-fighter]. He fought with a trident or harpoon made of tuna bones, a dagger, and a net that he threw at his opponent’s head.

In the late 3rd century, a complete break in Roman helmet design occurred. Previous Roman helmet types, based ultimately on Celtic designs, were replaced by new forms derived from helmets developed in the Sassanid Empire. A closely related form to the Roman ridge helmets is represented by a single helmet from Dura Europos which is of similar construction, but has a much higher-vaulted skull. It probably belonged to a Sassanid warrior of the 3rd century. This reinforces the evidence for a Sassanid origin of this type of helmet. Two main forms of helmet construction were adopted by the Romans at much the same time: the ridge helmet, described here, and the Spangenhelm, which was likely adopted from the Sarmatians. This statue comes from the Forum Boarium in Rome, where it was found during the pontificate of Sixtus IV (1471-1484). The statue likely represented the cult statue whithin the temple dedicated to the Greek hero, and previously thought to be a temple of Vesta (due to its circular form, surrounded by columns). There are significant remains of gilding (gold leaf).
Hercules (Greek: Herakles) holds the Apples of the Hesperides in one hand and his signature club in the other.
The statue is approximately 250 cm tall (~8 ft), displayed atop a tall pedestal, and is slightly reflective due to the gilding, making it difficult to photograph.
