69.58.1 NMW0003069 This species is one of more than 800 species of wild yam. They are climbers with heart-shaped leaves, small white flowers and tuberous rhizomes. Diosgenin is extracted from the rhizome; this compound is a useful starting material in the semi-synthesis of steroidal hormones and oral contraceptives. Dioscorea deltoidea is native to India and was once common in the foothills of the Himalayas.
