Ce monstre, à la fois reptile, chauve-souris, aigle et scorpion, est une figure légendaire présente dans les récits de la vie de sainte Radegonde, fondatrice de l'abbaye Sainte-Croix au 6e siècle et patronne de Poitiers. Selon les traditions, cette Grand’ Goule dévorait les religieuses du couvent avant que Radegonde ne l'abatte d'une malédiction et d'un signe de croix. Cette effigie, en bois polychrome dont la gueule est articulée, mesure près de deux mètres de long, Elle fut exécutée par le maître-sculpteur Jean Gargot en 1677, comme l'atteste la signature apposée sur le poitrail. This statue of Louis XIV was made by François-Frédéric Lemot. It is accompanied, at his feet, by two allegorical statues of the Saône and the Rhône, created by the brothers Nicolas and Guillaume Costou in 1720.
The first statue was created in 1713 and destroyed during the French Revolution, in 1793, to make cannon.
In 1825, the current statue, sculpted in Paris by François-Frédéric Lemot, was installed in the square.

Coronation Crown of France
The coronation crown of France was created by King Philippe Auguste in the 13th century.The red tiara was added later by King Jean II to show the religious power of the king.
The crown was melted by the Catholic League in 1590 and replaced by the queen’s crown, which was very similar but without a tiara. The queen’s crown was destroyed during the French Revolution.
Recreation mainly based on H. Pinoteau’s work.
