This is a turned wassail bowl with decorations from Duff House. The ancient New Year practice of ‘wassailing’ was practiced in England, Scotland and Wales. Parties progressed from house to house with greetings for the health and prosperity of the inhabitants, which were acknowledged by communal drinking out of a Wassail bowl. Although the drink differed from region to region, it usually contained a mixture of spiced ale, wine or cider. The term ‘wassail' comes from the Anglo-Saxon ‘waes-hael', which was the equivalent of the drinking toast ‘good health' today. Wassail bowls can be ceramic or wood. Some are very elaborate, like this example in the Dunimarle Collection. The weight of this bowl and decorations on the rim may indicate that it had more of a decorative function. The previously unpublished inscription is one of the finest examples of seventh-century Maya caligraphy and contains rare variants of number 9 and TZ’AK. There are no personal names or place names. The text only states that the cup belonged to “the artisan of the eternal lord”. The orthography of the inscription is rather unusual: the scribe apparently tried to arrange the text so that it would consist of 20 characters in 11 segments (blocks) with an extra visual emphasis on the word “eternal (bolon tz’akbuul)”. Model of an old and somewhat rusty enameled water bowl with 4K PBR-textures built to real-world scale (metric system).
The water bowl is a classic design inspired by the old enameled products of the Kockums brand, especially the yellow series with green edges that were produced from the 1930s to the 1970s. Bowls such as this one could be found in both private houses and hotels, and were among many other things used for cleaning and personal hygiene in places where running water was not readily available.
The model was created using Blender and Substance Painter. The model is UV-mapped and has a single material.
