Cooking Through History: Ancient Rome
The portioned segments not only made the bread easier to share and consume, reflecting the communal aspect of Roman meals, but also the efficiency and thoughtfulness in food preparation and distribution. In ancient Rome, white bread was often consumed by the wealthy, while darker bread was typically eaten by the poor. Today, however, darker breads, rich in whole grains, are valued for their health benefits, highlighting a shift in perception where what was once considered lesser is now often deemed healthier. This is the simplest version, separated by a reedstick without rope.

This pair of mosaic fountains are to be found in the Casa del Triclinio Estivo (II.9.5-II.9.7). They were scanned as part of the 2022 Pompeii Water and Sanitation Project field school run by the University of Missouri. Both fountains are placed in front of an outdoor triclinium and, unusually, are fed by a pair of tanks above the fountain instead of the city aqueduct. On the main face there is a scene in which a priest offers a libation on a tripod before performing the sacrifice of the bull. In the rest of the scenes we find various ritual elements.

You can see this planet like a secondary level you could have in Super Mario Galaxy, where there’s no monsters or goals but only signs explaining you some facts about the Earth.

Throughout the building’s lifetime, the site has functioned as a medical school as well as a place of healing in the heart of the old city of Damascus. Built in 1154, the building is characterized by its red brick muqarnas, elaborate entrance block, and finely carved wooden doors. The hospital was in use until the 20th century when it was converted into a Museum of Arabic Medicine and Science. The preservation of the building is a reminder of the major contributions of Islamic medicine to the world today.
