This wooden ‘Green Man’ carving came from the screen in Owston Abbey, Leicestershire, which was an Augustinian monastry. It was cut out during renovations in the 19th century.
The ‘Green Man’ has a long and interesting history as it appears in both non-Christian and Christian traditions. The Green Man has been associated with seasonal rebirth and renewal and as such transferred easily into Christian imagery. Altar de ofrendas situado dentro del templum –recinto sagrado– del Genius Augusti de Pompeya. Muestra relieves relacionados con el ritual de ofrendas religiosas a este dios protector del emperador. En la cara principal aparece una escena en la que un sacerdote ofrece una libación sobre un trípode antes de realizar el sacrificio del toro. En la parte trasera se ve un templo tetrástilo, con toda probabilidad el que se encontraría tras el altar.
En el resto de escenas encontramos una corona cívica –de hojas de roble– y diversos elementos rituales como la acerra, el lituus o el simpulum, entre otros.
