The cremated remains of a middle-aged man were found during the excavation of a round barrow at Sherford, Plymouth (Devon). He was found associated with a limestone mortuary structure and there are suggestions that he was a person of importance in his community. A singular copper-alloy knife was also found associated with him. This interpretation represents a person of some stature as evidenced by his clothing and the knife. This replica stands in the center of McKennan Park in Sioux Falls, SD.
It is a replacement for an older, folksy-looking wooden replica that was removed after vandalism in the 1960s. The wooden replica was in poor shape from exposure and seems to have been lost.
When the city decided to replace the replica, I supplied a copy of Frederic Auguste Bartholdi’s early study maquette to be used for modeling.
The replica was set atop the original pedestal previously occupied by the wooden replica.
I used my iPhone mounted on a painters pole with a bluetooth remote to snap photos of the upper parts of the replica. In total, I used 288 photos out of nearly 600 taken.

A little 3D story made for the WeeklyCGChallenge #102 “Viking Age”. I’m really happy with how this turned out.
Almost everything was done with Blender, but I also used PixPlant to get the map textures. It’s a great tool, easy to use, and easy to get great results for the Specular material workflow!
