This replica stands in the center of McKennan Park in Sioux Falls, SD.
It is a replacement for an older, folksy-looking wooden replica that was removed after vandalism in the 1960s. The wooden replica was in poor shape from exposure and seems to have been lost.
When the city decided to replace the replica, I supplied a copy of Frederic Auguste Bartholdi’s early study maquette to be used for modeling.
The replica was set atop the original pedestal previously occupied by the wooden replica.
I used my iPhone mounted on a painters pole with a bluetooth remote to snap photos of the upper parts of the replica. In total, I used 288 photos out of nearly 600 taken.

At a strip mall across town is this concrete Statue of Liberty. I’ve driven by it for years. I decided to do a quick and dirty model of it. By the time I got to the strip mall, the sun was close to setting and I had to hurry.
As you can see, South Dakota seasons are hard on decorative concrete sculptures like this one. The agragate under the surface of the concrete is starting to show in places where the concrete has worn away. The protective paint is patchy giving moisture more places to penetrate and wear down the concrete.
This model is just the latest generation cast from a prototype I first saw in the 1980s when the Statue of Liberty’s centennial was approaching. Liberty fever was on the rise and someone cashed in by creating this stylized replica.
It has been recreated in aluminum, fiberglass and concrete. It can be found in numerous statuary and garden centers. Like the Boy Scouts copper replica, it is kind of ugly but it grows on you 3D Model is ready to download for free, this model contains 922579 polygons.

This colossal granite sculpture of a bison can be seen at Falls Park, Sioux Falls, SD. Unfortunately, this model can’t be downloaded as it is under the copyright of Darold Bailey. I’ve posted it here only to allow visitors to view it.
I created this model from over 400+ photos shot on my iPhone. Bemused visitors must’ve thought I had the mother of all selfie sticks as I was lifting my phone high overhead with a painters pole to get the top of the sculpture!
