Les llànties, lucernae en llatí, eren utensilis fets de pedra, terracota o fins i tot metall que en època romana servien per il·luminar de manera artificial les estances de les llars. La llum era originada a partir d’una metxa o metxes que, en encendre’s, cremaven lentament gràcies a la càrrega d'oli d'oliva que hi havia a l’interior de la llàntia.
