I used 3d-Coat.
Step 1: I made normals for some panels and baked the occlusion
Step 2: Base colors. I made a color palette and I picked my colors from there. I also added some bolts on the metal plates.
Step 3: I added some smart materials, dirt and a gradient from the bottom.
Step 4: I hand painted all the rust effects, and other little dirt effects.

The shields, which date back to shortly before AD 256 and which were abandoned when Dura-Europos was sacked by the Sassanians, were in good condition with much of the painting still visible.
The ancient shield has been beautifully restored in digital 3D using available data from the Yale University Art Gallery and Herbert J.
