I was really curious on the particular art style the Valheim's devs went for, so i tried to replicate it and make a scene for it! Had a real fun time on this one. Most of the texture here are made by downscaling to something between 50x50 and 100x100, depending on the size of the object, and then upscaling to a normal txt size (512 or 1024), keeping the hard edges of the pixels. This method specifically on the normal map is what gives really strange results that match the art style. The Skuldelev ships are a group of five well preserved 11th century ships from the Viking period, found in the Roskilde Fjord in Denmark near the town of Skuldelev. Skuldelev 1 was a large ocean going ship, a trading vessel probably known as a Knarr. From analyzing the wood of the ship archaeologists were able to determine the ship had been built on the west coast of Norway around the 1030’s CE, and so ended it’s life far from where it was built. At some point in its life it had suffered massive damage which left it with a warped keel, and which necessitated significant reconstruction of the hull. This digital recreation is based on the ‘Ottar’, a full scale reconstruction made by the Roskilde Viking Ship Museum. The provision of a tent over the hold is hypothetical.
