According to this apartment-type dormitory project, 8 houses were built in Leningrad (USSR), two of which received a round extension for public institutions. The only building outside of Leningrad, the dormitory of the Krasny Oktyabr factory in Vitebsk, was built in 1979. The Belarusian building is distinguished by the number of floors (18) and facade finishing. Among the people, the house received the nicknames “Glassful”, “Corn”, “Barrel”.
Due to the strange layout, there was a tale circulating around Leningrad that these buildings were masking missile silos hidden inside. One of the residents of the house recalls: “I still remember the first time I was looking for a way out - like Semyon Farada in The Enchanters! All doors are the same. And the corridor never ends! How to get off the floor? On January 18th 1935, Clark Hopkins, the field director at Dura-Europos, found three painted shields stacked on top of each other during an excavation. The shields, which date back to shortly before AD 256 and which were abandoned when Dura-Europos was sacked by the Sassanians, were in good condition with much of the painting still visible.
The ancient shield has been beautifully restored in digital 3D using available data from the Yale University Art Gallery and Herbert J. Gute’s watercolor painting, “Wooden Shield Painted with Scenes from the Trojan War”.
