Two Komainu #3 (Guardian Lions) from Shinto Shrine
A pair of stone lion-dogs often flank the sandō near the entrance to the shrine or the haiden. These komainu, as the statues are known, are guardian figures believed to protect the space around the kami from evil.
The ultimate origins of these lionlike figures probably extend back to ancient India or even Egypt, but the more immediate source would appear to be Chinese. Guardian lions and other divine beasts were probably imported from Tang China, along with Buddhism, via the Korean Peninsula, accounting for their alternate name, kōrai-inu, or Korean dogs.
Most komainu closely resemble the so-called Chinese lion-dog. Typically, one of the creatures is depicted with its mouth open and the other with its mouth closed. This tradition has no relationship to Shintō per se but derives from Buddhist iconography, where it is used to represent the sacred utterance Aum - Two Komainu #3 from Shinto Shrine. TT 159 and TT 286 were ecavated by Clarence Fisher (University of Pennsylvania) in 1921-1923 in Dra Abu El Naga (a site on the West Bank of Luxor, housing hundreds of noblemen’s tombs dating from the Middle Kingdom, scattered periods in the 18th-26th Dynasties, and the Ptolemaic period). In response to the Ministry of Antiquities’ (MoA) desire to develop the site, TT 159, the 19th Dynasty tomb of the ‘Fourth Prophet of Amun, Raya’ and his wife Mutemwia and TT 286, the 20th Dynasty tomb of ‘the Scribe of the Table, Niay’, were selected for improvement by ARCE, with funding from USAID. In addition to conserving and opening the two tombs in 2019 through the training of 13 conservators from MoA, ARCE also provided more than 537 jobs to local workers who assisted in clearing the site and building visitor infrastructure.

I uploaded the sword alone previously and planned to upload its sheath separately, but eventually decided put them together so it can have a complete showcase as a set. Both high res model and all the details made in Zbrush, painted the texture in substance painter. The animal on the sheath at first was just flat shapes with no details on it, and I thought I finished the model. Later on I looked at it again and again, eventually decided I should add more details and to make the animal figures more alive and to give them more characters, since this was a sword made for Paraoh’s battles, it just has to have that spirit. Painting the texture was another challenge since there are just so many details on the original antique. Made this piece with a heart of awe, and it was a great learning experience!

Limestone stela of Intef, son of Ka: Intef is shown standing, receiving an offering from a small male figure who stands in front of him; the positioning of this figure and the scale are very characteristic of the First Intermediate Period. Behind Intef are three female figures, all referred to as his wives, named Mery, Iutu, and Iru. The principal text of the stela, which runs horizontally at the top and then continues vertically at the right side and then in front of the lower parts of the principal figures, is a mixture of offering formulas, important historical information, and phrases that form parts of standard idealized biographical texts.
