Limestone stela of Intef, son of Ka: Intef is shown standing, receiving an offering from a small male figure who stands in front of him; the positioning of this figure and the scale are very characteristic of the First Intermediate Period. Behind Intef are three female figures, all referred to as his wives, named Mery, Iutu, and Iru. The principal text of the stela, which runs horizontally at the top and then continues vertically at the right side and then in front of the lower parts of the principal figures, is a mixture of offering formulas, important historical information, and phrases that form parts of standard idealized biographical texts. An ancient Egyptian figurine of a woman with bird-like features and ‘puncture’ decoration. Possibly dating to the Middle Kingdom or Second Intermediate Period, these figurines were previously thought to have fertility connotations, although modern scholarship is moving away from this interpretation. Whilst the exact function of these figurines is unclear, they may have had particular apotropaic and healing associations. Many of these figurines are found broken in a way that suggests ritual destruction.

Mask from a complete cartonnage consisting of mask and three breast pieces. Excavated by the Egypt Exploration Society at Abydos. Ancient Egyptian, dating to the Ptolemaic period, 323-30 BC. The gold colouring reflects the ancient Egyptian belief that that god’s skin was made from that material. Other symbols of rebirth after death include the winged scarab beetle, show on the top of the head.
