In my learning journey and deep dive into 3D art, I’ve decided to exercise my modeling and texturing skills by recreating objects that wonder my affective memory, from that came the idea to recreate a series of Y2K and 2010s electronic props. While having a short life span in the ever racing world of portable electronics, these props were iconic in their time and have been ressurging as nostalgic millennials reach maturity. The first chosen model is a Cybershot digital camera by Sony. Widely spread throughout the 2000s the are being reclaimed as a contrapoint against smartphone’s multifunctionality and high quality cameras. First based off my dream spec, the Caribe Blue XR3 (so beautiful like dayum), I then realized MK4 XR3’s arent aaaaaaaall that different so I went ahead, dug up all my good ol Quatro Rodas magazines from back in the day and some prior knowledge and modelled all the remaining variations of the hatchback 89+ XR3. There are 4 main versions, the standard 1.8 XR3 represented by the Caribe Blue one, the Benetton special edition ‘Super Sport’ XR3, created in homage to the Benetton team win in F1 using Ford engines, The ‘89 nicknamed Escortwagen because of the partnership between VW and Ford, first year of the fancy cool bodykit, unpainted, and lastly the Fórmula XR3, which was a special limited edition featuring active electronic shock absorbers, a first in Brazil, an attempt of Ford to counter the ‘technologic’ gap they had against the competition (that had MPFI and other techy stuff for a long time before). It’s an homage to late 90’s PS1 games, like Gran Turismo. I used some of the same techniques used by artist back then such as opacity wheels, floating textures etc. although the not necessarily to make a 100% authentic PS1 era model. The VAZ-2101, commonly nicknamed “Kopeyka” (for the smallest coin, 1/100 of the Ruble), is a car introduced by the Soviet manufacturer AvtoVAZ in 1970, it was the company’s first product. The VAZ-2101 was sold under the brand “Zhiguli” in the Soviet Union, and branded as “Lada” for export. The name “Lada” was derived from a name of a “small boat (“ladya”) in Slavic language, symbolized by the logo badge. The model is based on the Italian Fiat 124.
