This is an feeding animation of a sub male Manta Ray (“Skye” Mobula c.f. birostris, disk width of 2.5 m) that was reconstructed from a combination of drone, gopro, and other video imagery and morphometric data. Note the twisting of the cephalic fins, which are used during feeding. Skye was filmed primarily while swimming off the coast of Palm beach, Florida. Jessica Pate and her team with the Marine Megafauna Foundation (www.marinemegafauna.org) were instrumental for filming Skye and providing access to other data on Manta Rays. The ANGARI Foundation (www.angari.org) and Angela Rosenberg coordinated and supported this research. Jonathan Bayuk and Ken Morton kindly donated funding to enable this research. Call it nostalgia, but I’ve always loved the look of the turtles from the original 1990 film. It blew me away that they took these relatively simple drawings, and brought to life these really realistic humanoid turtles. I remember losing my mind when I first saw them. When I started working on this by chance, there were these new turtle figures out that had captured quite a bit of the detail from the movie costumes so I used those as reference heavily. I built this model with high end game cinematics in mind, base model was around 83k before smoothed. He will eventually have a full working facial rig with mouth cavity....just getting lazy here towards the end on him..haha. The skin I ended up using one of the default new orc skin templates in painter and messed around with the layers in that with some of my own custom additions and I think it turned out fairly nice. I’ve always had an afinity for masks, so I decided i’d make one. I had no real idea what it would be like, so i collected lots of different mask references of many different types and styles. In the end i was heavily inspired by the Majora’s Mask short film and decided to go down a wooden tribal route. I started out in ZBrush and messed about with the design for a few days, eventually settling on what you see. I remeshed and exported that out to Max for a clean-up of some of the topology and to do the unwrapping (though i was lazy and didnt reduce the polys for most of it, ideally it would be lower poly but by the time my laziness on the matter had subsided I had already unwrapped it, so I decided to keep going) I then took it into Substance Painter, baked down my high poly details and textured. I had played with having glowing eyes but in the end I have decided it looks best without that. I added the symbols to the back as a hasty afterthought, and only now do I notice that they are off center!
