The main intention behind this gun was to make it look old, rugged and intimidating, combining these to give an old-school feel. The mechanism of this gun is similar to a modern minigun, the body holds the magazine on hooks which makes reloading a slow task. The style of holding the gun is tacky due to that it makes the gun a bit unstable for the user giving it a hard recoil momentum and an old-school feeling. The gun has two gauge meters one indicating the temperature and another one showing the amount of remaining bullets in the magazine. I wanted to try a colour scheme different from the basic steampunk colours (Golden/Brown), to make it look different from other weapons. At Hi-Rez, we decided to give ol’ Poseidon a make-over. It was time– as he was one of the first Gods of the original release of SMITE. I was very fortunate to get to work on this skin. He was passed around to other artists in the pipeline to make sure he fit to the Old version’s rig. My main job was to retopologize, texture and get his new body mesh into Unreal 3. I was, however, able to clean up the sculpt and finalize it for texture generation. Base-meshed in Max, Sculpted in Zbrush, Textured in Substance Painter 2 and Photoshop. Following a Japanese theme, I created a pond featuring a bamboo spout with a bowl, a water lantern, lily pads and waterlilies. The bamboo spout and bowl references the Tsukubai and Shishi-Odoshi fountains commonly found in Japanese gardens while the floating lantern is inspired by Tōrō Nagashi, a Japanese ceremony where paper lanterns are released into the river. This environmental prop was inspired by Inès “Ourka” Rotzinger’s concept art for Amber Isle (https://www.artstation.com/artwork/ZeBWom). The way they draw lily pads is really cute and I love the colours of the water, the foam streaks and the fun foam bubbles so I tried to preserve these traits in the texture and the 3D model. Modelled in Maya and Textured using Procreate. 3D Model is ready to download for free, this model contains 5822 polygons.
