La máscara siempre había sido una de las características constitutivas de la indumentaria de los actores venecianos y de los carnavales en general. Originalmente consistía en un rostro tallado con una apariencia monstruosa o grotesca.
Tras el auge del uso de máscaras cuando llegaba el Carnaval, estas se convierten ya en tradición en 1436 cuando los fabricantes de máscaras, llamados «Maschereri», regulan su profesión ante una demanda que seguía creciendo.
Las máscaras, hechas con papel maché , eran producidos en varios colores y adornadas con gemas y telas y las personas las usaban no solo en el período de Carnaval sino también en muchas otras ocasiones a lo largo del año.
