Chiếc ấm được làm tinh xảo với kiểu dáng giống như một chiếc cúp bằng đồng, có hai quai để bưng hai tay một cách trang trọng. Theo tiếng Nga, Samovar có nghĩa gốc là “tự đun sôi”. Thời trước, để đun sôi nước trong chiếc ấm đó, người ta gắp than hồng, quả thông, gỗ vụn bỏ vào một ống đặc biệt có tác dụng như chiếc bếp nhỏ bên trong Samovar để giữ nhiệt. Samovar còn thể hiện cho sự giàu có dựa vào hoa văn và độ tinh xảo của ấm.
