Description: On the 10 km stretch of the Atlantic coast of south-western Portugal, southward from the town Sines, one can find only few fishing reed rafts nowadays. This area has a documented ancient history, in which Phoenician settlers, Roman citizens, Visigoths and Moors recorded themselves. Jangada rafts have the shape of a triangular platform made from giant reeds Arundo donax tied with pieces of cord and strengthened with crosswise wooden laths. They are used for fishing sardines with nets, other fish with hooks and seafood. A fisherman propels a raft with a double bladed paddle. Recently its buoyancy is being improved with polystyrene foam slabs.
