1812 eröffneten die mit Beethoven befreundeten Wiener Klavierbauer Nannette und Andreas Streicher einen Klaviersalon, den sie mit Büsten berühmter Musiker schmücken wollten. Deshalb beauftragten sie den Bildhauer Franz Klein mit der Herstellung einer Beethoven-Büste. Um diese möglichst lebensnah zu gestalten, nahm Klein als Vorlage zunächst eine Lebendmaske aus Gips ab. […] Ein früher Nachguss der Maske ist vor dem Geburtszimmer zu sehen; ein Abguss der Originalbüste befindet sich schon seit 1890 im Beethoven-Haus. Diese gewaltige Edelkastanie, mit einem Durchmesser von annähernd 14m, ist der Baum mit dem größten Brusthöhenumfang Österreichs. Das Alter des Baumes wird von Experten auf mindestens 900 Jahren geschätzt.
Leider hat vor einigen Jahren ein Blitz in die Baumkrone eingeschlagen und so ist der Wipfel abgebrochen. Aufgrund dieses Zwischenfalles wurde dem Koloss der Status eines geschützten Naturdenkmales aberkannt und somit liegt der Schutz und die Pflege nun alleine in den Händen des Grundstückeigentümers.
