Modeled and textured for my MFA thesis, I researched artifacts at the American Civil War Museum in Richmond Virginia, and digitally restored these artifacts to what they might have looked like when they were first created. This pipe was heavily damaged and missing large chunks in the bowl. Restoring these missing pieces, and reducing the amount of wear on the pipe brought back more color and smoother features. Smoking was much more taboo back in the mid 1800s, even among soldiers. I’ve always had an afinity for masks, so I decided i’d make one. I had no real idea what it would be like, so i collected lots of different mask references of many different types and styles. In the end i was heavily inspired by the Majora’s Mask short film and decided to go down a wooden tribal route.
I started out in ZBrush and messed about with the design for a few days, eventually settling on what you see. I remeshed and exported that out to Max for a clean-up of some of the topology and to do the unwrapping (though i was lazy and didnt reduce the polys for most of it, ideally it would be lower poly but by the time my laziness on the matter had subsided I had already unwrapped it, so I decided to keep going)
I then took it into Substance Painter, baked down my high poly details and textured. I had played with having glowing eyes but in the end I have decided it looks best without that. I added the symbols to the back as a hasty afterthought, and only now do I notice that they are off center!
