Many people are familiar with the art installationin in the Helix Park, adjacent to the Falkirk Wheel - the large Kelpies - at 30 metres high, they are the world's largest equine sculptures, created by Andy Scott in 2013. What is less well known is that a mini version of these iconic sculptures, the pre production “maquettes", some 10 feet high are currently in residence in Ardrishaig at the western end of the Crinnan Canal at the Ardrishaig waterway's centre. They have been sited there at since 2019 having cantered down from their earlier site in Edinburgh. It has turned into an epic journey of discovery and importance, working with the assistance of the Sedlec Ossuary Director, and the Sedlec Roman Catholic Parish of Kutná Hora. This will be the most physically and historically accurate representation of the ossuary ever created, from measurements, blueprints, photoscanning, and historic records.
The Sedlec Ossuary is located in the town of Kutna Hora in the Czech Republic, which is a recognized UNESCO World Heritage site. The ossuary was decorated with the bones of over 60,000 humans 150 years ago, in a stunning artistic display that isn’t replicated in any ossuary or catacomb in the world. The Sedlec Ossuary is also currently undergoing extensive, unprecedented renovations to help preserve it for future generations to enjoy.

This Pounamu Toki (nephrite jade or greenstone adze) from the South Island of New Zealand was donated to Stromness Museum in the late 19th or early 20th century by an Orcadian living in Twatt, West Mainland. It is a mystery how this artefact came to be in Orkney, but in the 19th century Orcadians were great seafarers and many travelled to the South Seas on whaling ships.
The grooves along the side of this adze provide an insight into how this extremely hard material was cut and shaped. A great deal of time was expended on the surface finish and a mirror polish has been achieved over most of the surface.
