Many people are familiar with the art installationin in the Helix Park, adjacent to the Falkirk Wheel - the large Kelpies - at 30 metres high, they are the world's largest equine sculptures, created by Andy Scott in 2013. What is less well known is that a mini version of these iconic sculptures, the pre production “maquettes", some 10 feet high are currently in residence in Ardrishaig at the western end of the Crinnan Canal at the Ardrishaig waterway's centre. They have been sited there at since 2019 having cantered down from their earlier site in Edinburgh. The medieval chess pieces from the Scottish island of Lewis are among our most popular collections. They give us fascinating insights into the international connections of western Scotland and the growing popularity of chess in medieval Europe.
The eleven chess pieces on display in the Museum of Scotland were part of a large hoard buried on Lewis. The hoard contained 93 gaming pieces in total, including at least four chess sets as well as pieces from other games. The chess pieces were probably made in the late 12th or early 13th century in Norway.

Used 231 cross polarized photos and processed them in Agisoft Metashape. I sculpted the smooth parts of the model in Blender and then decimated the model in Agisoft and then manually optimized the lowpoly geometry in Blender. UV was also initially generated in Metashape and manually optimized in Blender. PBR maps were created in Substance Painter.
