Masada (Hebrew: מצדה‎ metsada, “fortress") is an ancient fortification in the Southern District of Israel situated on top of an isolated rock plateau, akin to a mesa. It is located on the eastern edge of the Judaean Desert, overlooking the Dead Sea 20 km (12 mi) east of Arad.
Herod the Great built palaces for himself on the mountain and fortified Masada between 37 and 31 BCE. According to Josephus, the siege of Masada by troops of the Roman Empire at the end of the First Jewish–Roman War ended in the mass suicide of 960 people, the Sicarii rebels and their families hiding there.

The parish church of Weißenkirchen in der Wachau is surrounded by a fortification with three corner towers. It is dedicated to the Feast of the Assumption. A chapel was already mentioned on this site after the year 1000. In the second half of the 13th century, a church was built in the area of today’s southern aisle. In the first half of the 14th century, the church was extended to the north in the area of today’s central nave. A north aisle was added in 1439 and a north chapel in 1455. The massive north-west tower was erected in 1502. The late Gothic choir was built between 1519 and 1529. The fortifications were extended in the first third of the 16th century. The nave was baroqueized in 1736/1738. After retiring from 40 years as a professional fisherman, Greeno used his knowledge of the sea to resurrect the art of traditional canoe construction, which had not been seen in Tasmania since the early 19th century.
