In the statue, the Greek hero Herakles was shown close to exhaustion on completion of the twelve labors set him by Eurystheus, ruler of the Argolid. The contrast between his powerful physique and his weary stance is echoed in this particularly fine rendition of his noble head, which is bowed with fatigue. The model is based on the Stechhelm, or Jousting Helmet, dating back to 1500 and kept at the Metropolitan Museum of New York.
It formed part of a highly specialized tournament armor worn solely for the Gestech, or German joust, fought with blunted lances. The object was to break lances or to unhorse the opponent.
